About the Job 

Based at Mandarin Oriental, Geneva, within the Ottolenghi Department, the Host/ess is responsible to welcome customers who come to eat in a courteous and efficient manner and to optimise the restaurant's activity by taking as many bookings as possible, either by telephone or in person, in accordance with established procedures. The Host/ess reports directly to the Restaurant Manager.

 

Here is a non-exhaustive list of tasks related to these responsibilities: 

 Before service: 

  • Have a thorough knowledge of the floor plan and the layout of our best tables. 

  • Ensure that there are enough Wi-Fi cards for our customers during service. 

  • Ensure the cloakroom is clean and tidy, ready for service. 

  • Ensure welcome candles are changed and lit. 

During service: 

  • Greet customers warmly and with a smile, take their coats and show them to their table, pulling out their chairs and wishing them a pleasant meal. 

  • Memorise customers' faces and table numbers for when they leave. 

  • When everyone has arrived, the hostess helps to tidy up the restaurant as much as possible with the front-of-house team, while ensuring that customers are seen off at the entrance and given their coats back. 

To ensure quality service, the hostess must: 

  • Be thoroughly familiar with the style of cuisine, including the name of the chef and his other restaurants around the world. 

  • Pass on all information concerning customer comments to the restaurant manager. 

  • Anticipate every customer request. 

  • Be able to welcome and seat guests according to the reservation plan and make last-minute changes. 

  • Be able to collect guests' coats from the cloakroom and return them upon departure. 

  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills (interpersonal skills) to build customer loyalty. 

  • Welcome and serve guests in accordance with the hospitality principles of a 5-star hotel, respecting the expectations of the Mandarin Oriental Group and Swiss Deluxe. 

  • Handle guest complaints in accordance with the LQE procedure and refer complaints and all guest comments to management. 

  • Adhere to and apply the Mandarin Oriental principles set out in ‘Our Commitments’. 

 

As Host/ess we expect from you: 

  • A passion for service and attention to detail. 

  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a similar position 

  • Previous service experience in a luxury hotel or fine dining environment preferred. 

  • Team spirit, curiosity, and a desire to learn and grow. 

  • Good communication skills and a flexible attitude. 

  • Fluency in English and French, another European language is a plus. 

  • A valid Swiss work permit or EU passport.
