Duty Engineer

About the job 

Based at the Mandarin Oriental Canouan / within the Engineering Department in Canouan, the Duty Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of the hotel’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building systems. The role also ensures guest areas, colleague areas, and facility infrastructure are maintained to property standards, supports preventive maintenance schedules, responds to daily operational issues, and provides technical support to both guests and colleagues.  The Duty Engineer reports to the Assistant Director of Engineering/ Director of Engineering. 

As Duty Engineer, you will be responsible for the following duties:  

Operational & Maintenance Tasks 

  • Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on HVAC, electrical systems, plumbing, refrigeration, fire safety equipment, kitchen and laundry machinery. 

  • Respond promptly to daily maintenance requests and work orders from all departments. 

  • Monitor property equipment logs (chillers, pumps, boilers, generators, etc.) and report abnormalities. 

  • Ensure all engineering work meets safety, compliance, and brand quality standards 

 

Guest & Colleague Support 

  • Respond to guest room maintenance calls quickly and professionally, ensuring minimal disruption. 

  • Support operational teams with technical assistance when required. 

  • Maintain strong communication with Front Office and Housekeeping regarding room status updates. 

 

Safety & Compliance 

  • Ensure all work adheres to safety regulations, building codes, and environmental standards. 

  • Participate in emergency response activities (power outages, system failures, fire alarms). 

  • Assist with maintaining records of repairs, maintenance schedules, parts inventory, equipment manuals. 

Teamwork & Reporting 

  • Communicate effectively with the Chief Engineer on ongoing issues and major repair needs. 

  • Support vendor/contractor activities when on property. 

  • Provide shift handover notes to ensure continuity between engineering teams. 

As Duty Engineer we expect from you: 

  • Technical certification in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Maintenance preferred. 

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in facilities, building maintenance, or engineering roles (hospitality experience an advantage). 

  • Knowledge of safety procedures, lock-out/tag-out systems, and preventive maintenance programs.
