About the job

Based at Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra, Mallorca, as the Director of Engineering, you will lead and control all engineering related activities with a clear focus in providing a balanced service to meet the needs of the physical property, our customers and colleagues. The incumbent is expected to actively participate in the general day-to-day operation of the department leading, mentoring, training and educating the engineering team. The Director of Engineering is responsible for the financial management of the property operation and maintenance expenses and for utilities consumption. During the pre-opening phase the Director of Engineering will be responsible for driving the Technical Services divisional critical path including recruitment of the Engineering team, process structuring and MO standards compliance.

As Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for the following duties:

  • To maintain in a proper and safe condition of all buildings, plant, plant rooms, equipment, and front and back of house areas.
  • To establish and implement the “Safe and Sound” procedures such as the Fire, Life, Health, Safety and Security, Emergency and Standard Operating Procedures in compliance with Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group standards.
  • To ensure all work carried out for the hotel is in compliance with the relevant statutory requirements, regulations and codes.
  • To perform “Emergency Response Team” duties as required.
  • Directly oversee and control the activities of the Engineering Management Team under his supervision.
  • To oversee the selection of engineering outsourced companies and services.
  • To participate in the formulation of strategic business plans for the hotel.
  • To formulate and implement strategic development for the hotel’s involvement in the local community.
  • To develop and implement preventative maintenance programmes in accordance with Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group guidelines.
  • To establish and manage the annual CapEX plan and budget for all aspects of engineering.
  • To oversee the strategic direction of general projects related to the enhancement of the hotel. Project management covers the areas of planning, administration, implementation and evaluation of financial results of projects.
  • To support the Financial Controller in the hotel’s overall financial performance; the annual hotel budget process; the energy and cost consumption; and the engineering contractor’s selection and documentation.
  • To support the Director of Human Resources in their strategy for the recruitment and selection of employees; career development programmes for employees; labour cost management; community programmes; and the evaluation and recognition of employees.
  • To support the IT&T Director in telecommunications upgrades and enhancements; annual maintenance of the contingency systems that support IT&T equipment and systems; and the annual testing and conformance of emergency power systems based on Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group guidelines.
  • To support the Operations team on the training and demonstration of various systems such as the key system for guest rooms, audio visual equipment, lighting and temperature and control systems, etc.
  • To participate in the Repairs and Maintenance, Project and Risk Management Committee meetings as required.
  • To conduct regular inspections of all front and back of house areas to ensure the quality and standards are maintained at the highest level.
  • To ensure all drawings, manuals and documentation is updated as and when changes are made.
  • To ensure all certifications, test reports, inspections and maintenance reports are properly stored and updated.
  • To be fully conversant with all technical details of all plant and services relating to the hotel.
  • To assist engineering colleagues with technical advice and ensure standards are maintained.
  • To prepare budgets, forecasts and costings.
  • To actively assist with energy conservation and control.
  • To maintain contact with local authorities and Government Departments such as the Fire Service Department, Electrical and Mechanical Service Department, Water Supply Department, Building Ordinance Office, Drainage Department, Labour Department, Environmental Protection Department, to ensure that all requirements are being complied with and that assistance or advice will be readily available whenever required
  • To promote and co-ordinate all requirements as per MOHG’s Fire, Life, Health, Safety and Security guidelines.

As Director of Engineering, we expect from you:

Experience and education

  • A minimum of five years in engineering management, ideally within luxury hospitality.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (preferably in areas such as Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Renewable Energy Engineering).
  • Pre-opening and resort experience is an advantage.

Technical Skills

  • Computer literate and an avid user of office automation application such as Words, Excel, Visio, etc.
  • Expert knowledge of key building systems: Management of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, energy systems, access control, and kitchen equipment to ensure efficiency and sustainability.
  • Maintenance management: Overseeing preventive and corrective maintenance programs to optimize system performance and lifespan.
  • Project and budget management: Coordinating engineering projects, maintaining budgets, and implementing infrastructure improvements.
  • Regulatory compliance: Ensuring adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations in the hotel setting.
  • Leadership and coordination: Leading engineering teams, ensuring operational efficiency, and collaborating with senior management for strategic decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in English and Spanish.
